Sayer Dates

Sayer Dates

Sayer dates, also known as Estamaran, Stamaran, Sambaran, or Sambon, are a variety of Iranian date fruit that is extensively exported worldwide, particularly to European countries. They are one of the sweetest date varieties, containing over 75% sugar. Sayer dates are semi-dried with a moisture content of less than 18%.

Origin and Cultivation

Sayer dates are primarily cultivated in the Khuzestan Province of Iran, particularly in the cities of Shadegan, Ahvaz, Abadan, Mah Shahr, and Karoun. Over 50,000 MT of Sayer dates are grown annually in Iran. Khuzestan Province accounts for approximately 70% of the country’s date production, with the Sayer variety making up a significant portion.

Characteristics

Sayer dates have the following characteristics:

Color: Reddish dark brown to light brown, depending on the cultivation area
Shape: Symmetrical oval to slightly rectangular
Taste: Very sweet with a slightly nutty, caramel-like, and rich toffee taste
Skin: Thin, slightly wrinkled, and easily separated from the flesh
Flesh: Fleshy, soft, chewy, and low in juice
Core: One oval, hard core that is easily detachable
Size: 2.5-5 cm in length and 7-10 grams in weight

Harvest and Storage

Sayer dates are harvested from late August to the first half of October. Due to their low moisture content, they have a long shelf life of up to 18 months and can be stored without refrigeration. This makes them suitable for the food industry, as they can be used as a raw product for various processed date products such as date syrup, date paste, date powder, and liquid date sugar.

Nutritional Benefits

Sayer dates, like other types of dates, are rich in vitamins A and B, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, fiber, and potassium. They are considered an excellent dietary choice for children and during the Ramadan fasting period due to their high sugar content and ability to provide a quick energy boost.

Popularity and Export

Sayer dates account for around 40-50% of Iranian date exports. They are popular in Russia, North America, Europe, and Arabian countries. Due to their premium quality, remarkable taste, and long shelf life, Sayer dates are among the most significant varieties of date fruits in the international market.
